Clinical Education in Practice

This activity, for graduate health sciences students, was initially developed as a face to face engagement in the Grainger Museum, and evolved into a fully virtual activity through the COVID 19 period. This activity is co-led by the Grainger Museum Academic Engagement staff, with Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences academic leads.

Academic lead for the virtual CEIP in 2023, Ms Hannah Sharma, writes: "The Grainger Museum activity in the subject “clinical education in practice” was developed to assist learners reflect and unpack their own observation process. The learners enrolled in the subject are educators in the clinical world and the subject aims to develop their skills in clinical education. The Museum presented as an unfamiliar environment to educators, who were now walking in the shoes of their students on clinical placements. The Grainger Museum activity deliberately exposed groups of educators to only some areas of the museum artifacts and the purpose was to unpack the process of making meaning of the presented information. Eventually, the learners discussed and presented their sections to the bigger group and adjusted their inferences considering others’ observations and conclusions. This activity mimics inter-disciplinary approaches to patient care – which is such an important skill for educators themselves and for educators to teach their students."
