Peruvian composer Nilo Velarde presents Chiang, Pilgrim of Dreams, a chamber opera that explores, through music and dramaturgy, the historical experience of Chinese immigrants who arrived in Peru during the nineteenth century and their gradual integration into Peruvian society. With an original story and libretto by Maritza Núñez, the opera approaches this history from the perspective of an immigrant who, uprooted from his homeland and in search of a better future, arrives in Peru and encounters both opportunities and adversity. Through this personal journey, the work opens a broader reflection on migration, displacement, cultural encounter and the construction of identity.

Drawing on Chiang, Pilgrim of Dreams, Velarde will discuss the ideas, research and creative decisions behind the opera, examining how music and dramaturgy can engage with historical experience and cultural memory. The lecture will consider the opera as a form of ethnographic archive—an artistic space through which experiences of migration and cultural transformation can be represented, interpreted and preserved. Through musical excerpts and reflections on his creative process, Velarde will explore the relationship between composition, history and cultural identity, demonstrating how contemporary music can offer new perspectives on the social and historical processes that have contributed to shaping present-day Peru. The lecture will also introduce Velarde’s new composition, Peru: Copper Producer, Past and Present, created for presentation at the Copper to the World Conference in Adelaide. By bringing these two works into dialogue, the lecture offers a broader perspective on Nilo Velarde’s creative practice and on the ways contemporary composition can become a means of exploring migration, history, memory, culture and Peruvian identity.
